Date: February 9th 2018

Hello lovelies,

Welcome to our birthday week! Our very first event was on Valentine's Day in 2002, can you believe it? We turn 16 this year, so please join us in celebrating our peak terrible teenage behavior (did you know we're also hosting a makeout party tonight via House of Scorpio?).

Here's how we're celebrating (full invites below):

  • Tomorrow! Our annual love letter to all things cabaret, Meet Me in Paris. Luscious burlesque, tantalizing dancers, charming magic, against the backdrop of roaring hot jazz with a French feel -- followed by an electro-swing dance party. Tix: http://bit.ly/GS_cabaret (yes, door sales will be available).
  • Like we've done for the last dozen years, we celebrate Valentine's Day proper, Wed 2/14, with our legendary Banya party. Tix: http://bit.ly/GS_banya (we won't have a chance to email you again, so keep an eye on the Facebook page for the latest ticket availability -- we're usually maxed out for this one).
  • Later in Feb (2/23): our craft cocktail pop-up, The Cocktail Experiment, on a new monthly schedule. Now you can always count on us being open the fourth Friday of the month, as a refuge from the overcrowded weekend bar scene.

Cheers,

Gemini & Scorpio,

The Cocktail Experiment + February Babies Birthday Party

Fri, Jan 26, 8pm-1am, FREE admission, 21+ (25+ recommended) Plus: FREE drinks if you bring a cocktail ingredient $6 per experiment / $17 flight of three / cash only

Gemini & Scorpio Loft, Gowanus, BK
Official site & address RSVP: http://www.geminiandscorpio.com/events.html FB: https://www.facebook.com/events/167238384003970/ Social media: @gemini_scorpio / #geminiandscorpio

For the first time ever, we're opening our doors as a craft cocktail lounge on a set monthly schedule. Every fourth Friday, enjoy inventive cocktails in a better-than-bar atmosphere: a sexy low-lit loft, lots of couches, sprawling roof, chill music, serious skills behind the bar, no attitude, no cover. Weekend bars are awful; come hide out here. We'll make you something delicious.

Plus, the Experiment: craft cocktail pop-up meets Iron Chef. One kickass bartender, a fully stocked bar, and YOU bringing a liquid challenge: a bottle of something unusual for our pro to turn into a one-of-a-kind cocktail. If your bottle is used in creation of a cocktail, you and up to three friends get a complimentary round. No two cocktails will be the same, and all will be delicious.

Is your birthday in February? Your first drink is on the house (show us your ID). You can even get in touch to reserve a couch, arrange party favors, etc. For everyone else: free un-birthday baked goods!

Tips on bringing ingredients: we welcome both liquor and mixer challenges, but please no basic juices or sodas...that's not what craft cocktails are made of. Consider: half-size bottles, homemade infusions or syrups, that forgotten bottle of weird booze you don't know what to do with, inexpensive amaros, bitters or vermouths. Most importantly, since whatever you brought will be in your free cocktail round, choose flavors you enjoy!

ART: Damien Echols’ “High Magick” http://www.lastritesgallery.com/exhibitions/upcoming In his debut solo exhibition with the gallery, artist Damien Echols aims to create a sacred space and to demonstrate that the techniques of ceremonial magick are not relics from a bygone age. In 1994 Echols was wrongfully accused and sentenced to death row for 18 years. Through outside support and documentaries like “Paradise Lost” and “West of Memphis”, he was able to make an appeal and new DNA evidence was submitted to the case resulting in his eventual release. For Echols, Magick was a coping mechanism to distract from mental and physical turmoil during his time in prison. Creating talismans helped him preserve his sanity and focus direct his attention away from pain, humiliation and trauma he was undergoing. (thru 2/17, Last Rites Gallery, 325 W 38th St, Frnt 1, see site for details, FREE)

THEATER: The Cult Play
http://www.phoenixtheatreensemble.org/taking-flight-new-works-development-2-2 This new dramedy by Topher Cusumano, follows The Soul Scouts, a religious cult run by Mama Pearl, a charismatic mystic. The group believes the divine rapture will be realized with the coming of the Goddess. However, Mama Pearl fears she’s losing control of the struggling group after the defection of a longtime follower. When Mae, a tech-savvy queer punk, begins the process of joining the group, she introduces Mama Pearl to the powers of social media, changing the course of the Soul Scouts’ destiny forever. (thru 2/17, Paradise Factory Theatre, downstairs, 64 East 4th St, see site for details, $25)

ART: Pattern in Landscape
https://www.frontroomles.com
This group show includes artists that explore the concept of landscape outside of conventional ideas and incorporate components of pattern into their composition. These artists often make use of naturally occurring patterns such as spirals, waves, tessellations, cracks, stripes, symmetrical branches and fractals. Featuring the work of Sasha Bezzubov, Thomas Broadbent, Stephen Mallon, Mark Masyga, Ross Racine, Emily Roz, Zoe Wetherall and Julia Whitney Barnes. (thru 2/18, Front Room Gallery, 48 Hester St, see site for details, FREE)

THEATER: [PORTO] by Kate Benson
https://www.thebushwickstarr.org/annual-gala-1/2017/12/5/porto-by-kate-benson A woman walks into a bar. Her name is Porto. She's a regular. She likes this bar: serious food, serious wine, serious bartender-a staple in a gentrifying Brooklyn neighborhood (perhaps Bushwick?). Her friends, her wine, and her artisanal snacks are there; her doubts about being a Modern Woman are put on snooze. A handsome stranger walks in and orders something special. Disruption ensues: an upside-down romantic comedy unfolds inside and outside her head. Desires of all kinds are awakened with a ferocious thump. A nice smile is a nice smile, but can we enjoy the sausage once we know how it's made? (thru 2/25, WP Theater, 2162 Broadway, see site for details, $40-$90)

THEATER: Fusiform Gyrus - A Septet for Two Scientists and Five Horns http://here.org/shows/detail/1968
In Talking Band’s new music-theater work, big ideas bump up against big sound. Five brassy horns and two eccentric scientists leapfrog from epiphany to epiphany. The show celebrates the resilience of friendship, the power of music to make us feel like anything can happen, and the rigorous tradition of scientific discovery in a world where scientific truth is often challenged. (thru 2/25, Tue-Sat 7pm/Sun 2pm, Here, 145 Sixth Ave, $25-$75)

MAGIC: American Escape Artist starring Thomas Solomon http://www.coneyisland.com/event/solomon2918 This performance showcases the award-winning and original escapes of Thomas Solomon, recognized by the Academy of Magical Arts as the "World’s Greatest Escape Artist." With two network television specials under his belt, his performances at Coney Island will feature exciting presentations on classical magic and the unique escape artistry that has audiences standing and cheering. (thru 2/29, Fri, Coney Island Theater, 1208 Surf Ave, BK, 8pm, $15)

ART: Solid Light Works - Anthony McCall https://pioneerworks.org/exhibitions/anthony-mccall-solid-light-works This exhibition marks the artist’s first institutional exhibition in New York and first time that his vertical installations will be shown alongside their horizontal variants. Requiring over thirty feet of clearance from floor to ceiling, very few New York venues can accommodate these six-colossal works. The epic vertical and horizontal installations will fill Pioneer Works’ monumental main hall, which will be completely blacked out and immersed in haze. (thru 3/11, Wed-Sun, Pioneer Works, 159 Pioneer St, BK, 12pm-6pm, FREE)

ART: Gamelatron: Sonic Kinetic Sculptures by Aaron Taylor Kuffner, solo exhibition https://www.crossing-collective.com/gamelatron The exhibition is a dialogue with the emerging field of robotics, sound resonance and it's effect on the psyche. This is Kuffner's most extensive exhibition of Gamelatron artworks to date. Within the gallery's various spaces he is presenting 7 Gamelatrons. The show features over 80 robotized gongs and 6 never seen before artworks. There is seating with benches, rugs, and pillows. Kuffner has transformed the gallery into a urban sanctuary, internationalizing the exhibition as an offering. (thru 4/8, Tue-Sun, Crossing Collective Gallery, 559 W 23rd St, 10am-6pm, FREE)
