- [HoS event] - Lip Service: pansexual makeout party ($0-25, members only) - Since you might be considering a HoS membership for this month to check out Persephone, here's another event to entice you: a party where making out in dark corners is not just tolerated, but encouraged. Even if you're only playing within your closed circle, doing that without feeling like you're breaking the social contract feels pretty great. For you more adventurous folk, there is Sexy Jenga and Spin the Bottle, and a roomful of curious humans you can ask to smooch. It's the signature HoS event, and it's a ton of fun without a lot of pressure.

This month's feature: Daughters of Darkness (1971)

Released at the same time as a number of horror movies centered on "lesbian vampires," Daughters of Darkness (1971) is arguably the most sensual, the least exploitative, and most subversive. The plot involves a young newlywed couple (including John Karlen of the cult TV show Dark Shadows) who check in at a grand, mostly abandoned hotel on the seaside near Bruges during the off-season. The only other guests are the ultra-stylish Countess Elizabeth Báthory (Delphine Seyrig) and her secretary/traveling companion, the former of whom quickly takes a liking to the new bride. Director Harry Kümel emphasizes the erotic tensions among the four with an almost hypnotic use of color. However, it's Seyrig, whose character was based on the notorious murderer Erzsébet Báthory, but whose look was based on German movie star Marlene Dietrich, who steals every scene with a witty, commanding performance as a predator with a seemingly endless series of cool outfits to change into.

Sinema Club is curated and hosted by Phil Guie-Ng (@thatphilguymovies): an inquisitive, ardent longtime film critic who is dying to tell you about movies you haven't heard of yet. As a reviewer at the website Film-Forward, his self-appointed mission was covering documentaries and features about subjects who challenged conventional attitudes about gender, masculinity, and more. When Phil isn't writing about movies, you can find him in Brooklyn taking part in protests on behalf of basic human rights.
