Date: April 13th 2012

Hello lovelies,

Packed weekend, and of course that means our listings are late today. Sorry. We're always looking for people to help us edit the weekly newsletter -- it's basic Google Docs stuff, and you can earn credits towards party admission. Reply if you might be able to help.

  • The most exciting thing first: the final art for The Drowned Ball is up at http://bit.ly/DB_art -- and as much as we already love the work of Teetering Bulb, this may be the most gorgeous thing we've ever seen them do. It even went a bit viral on Twitter/Tumblr/Facebook this week. Remember, your only chance to own this print is either with a 1st class ticket to the party, or by purchasing directly at the event, while they last. We're only printing 50, and going all out with print & paper quality, too.

  • We're getting press confirmations for The Drowned Ball, and so far it's an editor pick in TimeOut for this week's Titanic event roundup -- http://bit.ly/HFm3Sv -- and we know it's hitting TONY again next week, as well as The Village Voice. And you may have heard about it on WNYC earlier today. So you guys better get on those ticket purchases!

  • The next makeout party is Fri, Apr 27 - details over at http://www.houseofscorpio.com

Reminders from last week:

  • May 5 (Cinco de Mayo!) is our next loft-party-in-a-construction-zone. Killer DJ lineup, cheap drinks, all the Brooklyn loft party fun you can handle. Details below.

  • May 27, the Sunday of the Memorial Day Weekend, we're planning something Ridiculously Epic involving...marshmallow peeps. If you're a crafty/artist type intrigued by this, drop us a line.

Facebook alert: FB has changed settings for groups, so if you relied on being a G&S group member to get your party invites, that's NO LONGER HAPPENING (WTF, FB, really?!). All upcoming events can be found via the group or our profile, but we're not sure how to handle the invites anymore, since we hate spamming via friend invites. We'll let you know if we figure something out -- or let us know if you have dealt with this already!

Cheers,

The greatest ship ever built sets sail once more. In the grand ballroom, an orchestra plays to slow-swaying aristocracy, all sparkling diamonds and rustling silk, while in steerage below, the lower classes stomp to fiddles and accordions. But mere hours later, disaster strikes, and with no escape possible, mayhem ensues.

Upstairs: chamber music by Trio Mio Myo and waltzes from around the world by Golden Angel Waltz Orchestra. Downstairs: Strung Out String Band whirls you into an old-time vortex as you're surrounded by immersive video projections. Michaeline Sexton is adorned in Asphyxia's Ghost couture apparatus by Kaytee Papusza. DJs to follow on both floors, with a wild remix of early Americana and modern beats: Joro Boro, $mall ¢hange, DirtyFinger, and Shakey.

In the tradition of turn-of-century Grand Bal art posters, artist duo Teetering Bulb are creating a one-of-a-kind painting to commemorate the event. Skink Ink Fine Art Printing will run a limited unnumbered edition of 50 12x18 prints on archival cotton rag paper, only available to event guests as bundled with 1st class tickets ($50) or at the event, if any left ($60).

Ticket levels*: 1st & 2nd classes board 9pm, and enjoy an hour of complimentary champagne, and a waltz dance class at 9:30: $85 with custom art print; $35 without. Steerage boards 10pm: $25. If any tickets are available at door, they're $10 more; only $15 after 12am. This event will sell out.

Dress code: Turn-of-century-ball meets Mermaid Parade meets zombies. Dress upper class or steerage, before the iceberg or after -- or even as the iceberg itself. Sea creatures most welcome, especially luminescent ones. Ocean explorers, bring your cameras.

*This event is a fundraiser for our new loft party space. Please support at the highest level you can afford.

PERFORMANCE: Lunatic Cunning http://dixonplace.org/html/Godwin_Feb12.html Premiere performance by James Godwin, puppetry and performance art pioneer and founder of raunchy puppet troupe, The Elementals (Uncle Jimmy's Dirty Basement), whose creations have been described by The Village Voice as "gorgeously wrought mutants who look like they evolved downstream from a nuclear waste dump and talk like vulgar barflies." Lunatic Cunning is a solo, semi-autobiographical 'mockumentary', mixing experiences from Godwin's own life – such as work with Julie Taymor on Across the Universe, as well as appearances on Saturday Night Live, Chappelle's Show, PBS and with the Muppets--with a humorous examination of the occult roots of puppetry and performance art. EVENT: Congress of Curious Peoples http://www.coneyisland.com/congress.shtml Since the 1860's, Coney Island has been a beacon for strange and interesting people. For generations, it has attracted the curious and the enlightened, the onlooker and the performer. Every spring Coney Island USA convenes The Congress of Curious Peoples, a 10-day gathering of unique individuals at Sideshows by the Seashore and the Coney Island Museum, celebrating Coney Island's subversive and exciting power and exploring its political, artistic, and spectacular possibilities through performances, exhibitions, and films by important artists in the world of the 21st century sideshows. Adding to the madness, Coney Island USA introduces the Congress for Curious People. Consisting of a 2-day symposium, this additional congress will take a scholarly yet popular approach to the curiosities and wonders of Coney Island and seek to investigate--via lectures and and a scholarly conference--the relationship between education and spectacle in American amusements, the collection of curios ities from the renaissance to the present, and the display of "freaks" and "primitive peoples" in fairgrounds and worlds fair settings. The series will celebrate the interdisciplinarity of Dime Museums while calling into question both popular and scholarly assumptions about the importance of Coney Island's legacy, its sordid past, and its titillating present. (this week thru next weekend, Sideshows by the Seashore and The Coney Island Museum, 1208 Surf Ave, Coney Island, BK, $5-$25 per event / $75-$100 congressional pass)

Before and after the feature, we'll show extensive footage from the Occupy Wall Street movement and the recent uprisings in north Africa and Europe which inspired it. FILM: My Mars Bar Move http://anthologyfilmarchives.org/film_screenings/calendar#day-12 Anthology is overjoyed to present this new film by Jonas Mekas, a tribute to the dear, departed Mars Bar. Our neighbor ever since we moved to the Second Avenue Courthouse building in 1988, the Mars Bar represented an undiluted blast of the old East Village, keeping alive the punk sensibility and anarchic attitude that's increasingly a thing of the past in this part of the city. Destined to be replaced by yet another glass condo building, and taking a piece of our heart with it to the grave, the Mars Bar nevertheless lives on through Mekas's lens. “For some twenty years, Mars Bar, at the corner of First Street and Second Avenue, Manhattan, has been my bar. That's where we went for beer and tequila whenever we had to take a break from our work at Anthology Film Archives, and it was also a bar where most of those who came to see movies at Anthology ended up after the shows. We always had a great time at Mars Bar. It was always open, there was always the jukebox, and very often t here was no electricity, and it was old and messy and it didn't want to be any other way – it was the last escape place left in downtown New York. So this is my love letter to it, to my Mars Bar. Mars Bar as I knew it." –J.M. (Anthology Film Archives, 32 Second Ave, 8pm)

FOOD: NYC Food Crawl: April Coffee http://www.nycfoodcrawl.blogspot.com After a few months' break, the NYC Food Crawl is back for what will likely be its final food crawl under current management. The Crawl has been running since 2009, and is proud to have introduced New York to affordable, portable food and new friends (almost) monthly since then. We choose a different theme monthly of portable, inexpensive delicacies such as dumplings, samosas, and knish -- then map a route of different locations where they can be enjoyed. Teams are assigned, route maps are distributed, and folks are encouraged to go at their own pace as they make new friends. Coffee is a classic and ancient beverage, having been served in Central and South America since long before the arrival of Europeans. Highly addictive and delicious, coffee has also acquired many cultural connotations in the modern age. Images of black-clad Beatniks sipping espresso contrast sharply with overworked suits chugging back drip coffee throughout the day. Although New York has traditionally bee n deprived of quality coffee destinations, this has changed in recent years, and coffee snobs everywhere can find something to their liking. Come train your palette with this oh-so-delightful beverage. (RSVP for location, 6pm, FREE/pay as you go)

EVENT: The Rematch http://www.dukeriley.info/projects/the-rematch The American broadcast of Duke Riley's Rematch, a river race among the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. Race feed from Zhujiajiao, China. Performance by Lara Allen. Just a reminder: Gambling is illegal. From the artist: "Thousands of years ago, the Jade Emperor decided to assign an animal's name to every year, in order to simplify the calendar for the people of China. A swimming race among 12 animals across the mighty river was organized to determine the sequential order in which year they would appear. This would become the Shengxiao, the Chinese zodiac. It is a well known that the rat, the winner of the race, cheated. Nevertheless, this oversight established an order that has remained a celebrated tradition for centuries. In the interest of fairness, I propose a rematch. Working with local artists and communities along the canals of Zhujiajiao, China in April 2012, I will restage this race. All of the zodiac animals will be represented by actual live animals. Each will be fer ried separately through the canals in boats paddled by expert rowers from the community. In addition, each boat will be decorated by a different local artist according to the animal it carries. An awards ceremony will take place on a floating grandstand. Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third place animals/rowers. They will pose for photographs with Riley and local dignitaries. A feast with the participants will follow." (Manhattan: Magnan Metz Gallery, 521 West 26th St bet 10th and 11th Ave; Brooklyn: Egg and Dart Club, RSVP for address: eggdartclub]at]gmail.com; 6-10pm / race 8pm, FREE/sugg don benefits the displaced animals of the former Shanghai private zoo)

WORD: Film Noir: The Poetry Brothel in Black and White https://www.facebook.com/#./events/172076426247010 A Poetry Society of New York fundraiser. It was a dark and stormy night in New York City, but who cares -- all the nights were dark and stormy. It was late, and we'd found ourselves inside a hidden speakeasy, wound in pure black silk, hair in victory rolls, tall as skyscrapers, and round as the barrels of a shotgun. Of course we never carried anything that large back then. Let's just say we always had a pistol behind the gin mill, cocked and ready to blow one down if he deserved it. You might be wondering how a couple of cats like us came to get mixed up in a rat race like this. well, I'll tell you. 'Cause this is noir, sweetheart, and we are the Poetry Brothel. With live jazz standards, sultry burlesque, intimate poetry readings by your favorite poetry whores, and perhaps a mystery or two to be solved. We'll be painted head to toe in shades of grey, impatiently awaiting your arrival. So dress up, darlings. Come in black and white. Bring your doll. Throw her around the dance floor. All proceeds of this installment go toward the Second Annual New York Poetry Festival. (The Back Room, 102 Norfolk St, 8pm-1am, $10, 21+)

Quick, fast, and dirty, the Pop-Up Museum presents the unpresentable: change itself. (thru 4/22, The Observatory, 543 Union Street, enter via Nevins, FREE)

ART: PYSANKA: The Ukrainian Easter Egg http://www.ukrainianmuseum.org/ex_120301pysanky.html Pysanky are the unique Ukrainian Easter eggs known the world over for their intricate, colorful designs. Drawn from the Museum's extensive folk arts collection, the nearly 300 eggs are decorated in a variety of regional styles, rich colors, and assorted motifs; many are the work of acclaimed artist Sofika Zielyk. The hand-crafted pysanky are made using raw eggs, dyes, and beeswax in a wax-resist method process, known as batik. The process results in colorful eggs ornamented with an array of detailed geometric, floral, and faunistic symbols. The art of creating Ukrainian pysanky (from the word pysaty – to write) has been handed down from generation to generation. This ancient art form is taught in workshops Sat/Sun thru 4/1 (adults & children over 12). The Ukrainian Easter Traditions workshop on March 24, for students age 16 and older, offers hands-on training in baking Easter breads and other traditions related to the holiday. March 31: an opportunity to watch artists in acti on as they create beautiful pysanky. In addition to the demonstrations, the award-winning short film Pysanka by Slavko Nowytski will be shown continuously from 1-5 p.m. (thru 5/27, The Ukrainian Museum, 222 East 6th St bet 2nd/3rd Ave, $8 / plus $10-25 for special workshops)

ART: This Side of Paradise http://www.nolongerempty.org/nc/home/events/event/speakeasy-paradise The gates of the Andrew Freedman Home will open to the public. The Home was once built to be a haven, a paradise, for the rich elderly who had lost their fortunes. Bequeathed by millionaire Andrew Freedman, the Home provided not only food and shelter but all the accoutrements of a rich and civilized life style – white glove dinner service, a grand ball room, a wood-paneled library, billiard room and a social committee who organized concerts, opera performances and the like. Referencing this quixotic history, This Side of Paradise will reference the past and reconnect the vision of Andrew Freedman to today's Bronx and its realities. The exhibition and its extensive public programming onsite and offsite will draw together the economic and social history of the Home with the present day realities of the Bronx and its residents. The selected artists' will work in a site-specific manner and will respond to such issues as memory, immigration, storytelling, aging and the creation of fantasy that the original concept of the Home "being poor in style" suggests. This Side of Paradise will celebrate human ingenuity, the strength of the human spirit and the resilience needed to fashion beauty, hope and rejoicing. (thru 6/5, 1125 Grand Concourse, Bronx, tours Thurs-Sun, 1pm-7pm)
