Hello lovelies,

Oh man, if you missed the new monthly insanity that was Cirque du so Weird last night, we don't even know what to tell you. The show is so X-rated, there's virtually no images of it we can share. We did post a hilarious censored snippet to our Instagram stories, if you want a taste :P http://instagram.com/gemini_scorpio -- but really you'll have to catch it on the next and every first Thursday of each month.

Onwards to party news!

  • Tonight! Our underground tropical casino returns, complete with three gaming stations, tropical bass beats, and overcomplicated tiki drinks: welcome to the Castaways Casino Club. Yes, you can actually play and win, and your winning credits can be used at our parties!
  • If you love DIY spaces like ours -- and know and love Meow Wolf out in Santa Fe -- we urge you to come down tonight to tell us on camera why you think they're important. Meow Wolf created a most generous nationwide grant in the wake of the Ghostship fire, and we were one of the lucky DIY space recipients. Now they want to do it again, and they're collecting snippets of interviews for the process. Come speak up for us!
  • Goldmine, our quarterly pop-up market on Sun 4.22, is going to be completely over-the-top. Two weeks to go, and we already have two venues, twenty vendors, three extras, three "green living" workshops, and one fab photo booth -- and more being confirmed every day. See invite below for current vendors, and drop us a line if you want to participate. You don't have to be a pro, just have fun things for sale -- especially up-cycled, costume, vintage & thrift. And we'd love more workshops and extras, too.

Cheers,

Gemini & Scorpio,

Castaways Casino Club

Friday, Apr 6, 9pm-late, sliding scale $10-20 donation, 21+ with ID (25+ suggested) Gemini and Scorpio Loft, Gowanus, BK
Address with RSVP: http://www.geminiandscorpio.com/events.html FB: https://www.facebook.com/events/1771485769584635/ Social media: @gemini_scorpio #geminiandscorpio

Calling all faux millionaires to litter their gold coin at our illicit gambling establishment far offshore on the banks of Gowanus. The casino club will feature blackjack, roulette and the star attraction of the night: Texas hold'em tournament, played at 10pm, 11pm, and 12am for a $50 value prize. For non-tourney games, a member credit system will let you use your winnings for future party entry, drinks, etc.

The original Castaways resort in Vegas was peak-60s polynesian insanity. We'll honor our namesake with some tropical drinks & beats.

Dress suggestions: funky party-wear, 1960s Polynesian kitsch, faux fancy, vintage lounge, sparkly cocktail, or other non-sloppy attire appreciated. No elaborate costumes or formalwear required, but you know we love it when you put in effort.

We'll turn the heat way up for some sweaty dancing joy. Wear layers!

Lastly: we still have a few of those ridiculous tiki to-go tumblers from the last Castaways. Take your tropical drinks to go in one of those bad boys for only $10.

Vendor and artist call for Goldmine pop-up market Sun 4/22 (Earth Day)

Calling all fine artists and makers/vendors of crafts, thrift, vintage, accessories and of green/sustainable items and services! Goldmine is a quarterly no-fee pop-up market, organized by Gemini and Scorpio, and located at the Gemini and Scorpio Loft in Gowanus, BK. For this edition of Goldmine, we also take over a gallery on the next block (313 Butler Gallery - a classic white box with a lovely garden) to add a fine art component and more market space.

  • What works best at Goldmine is wearables in theatrical over-the-top style, or otherwise artistic and unique items (not basics): fascinators, hats, lingerie, headpieces, masks, costumes. Larger items (furniture, housewares) are welcome too, now that we have a ground floor location. You don't have to be an actual vendor in your daily life, just have to have unique items for sale (clean out those closets!). It's Earth Day on 4/22, so an emphasis on upcycled or sustainable materials, or otherwise relevant items for sale would be great. Organizations that do community work in that realm, and/or specifically in Gowanus are most welcome.
  • Fine art for the gallery, wall or floor placement, preferably under $300 and relevant to Earth Day in theme and/or materials.
  • Organizations and presenters who can do mini workshops, presentations, lectures, etc -- we have a second room at the gallery that we want to convert into a learning space for the day. Hands-on stuff is great, but even a simple brief talk would be excellent.
  • Any fun extras to add: snacks, giveaways, services, experiences, classes, etc.

Vendor info:
- To vend, message us with a link to your stuff or a note about it, if you're not a pro seller. For vendor placement, please contact vend [at] geminiandscorpio [com] (that includes table vendors who may also have wall art). The fine art curation and sales go through the gallery: jsgalleryinfo [at] gmail. - There are no fees for vending at this event, just a 20% donation towards the space(s) from your sales, collected by G&S. - We have sofas, chairs & a few clip lights, but please bring any "nice" lighting or decoration for your table / area. - We have a few 2x2 tables (claim yours quickly) or BYO, up to 6'. Our tables are slatted, and we suggest bringing a cover. - BYO racks and mirrors, though a couple of mirrors are on site. - First come, first served on choice of locations - We have wifi; bring your mobile payment solutions.

THEATER: Cheating Death: Magic, Memoirs & Mortality http://www.thetanknyc.org/theater/996-cheating-death-magic-memoirs-mortality tix: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3346712 Written and performed by Nelson Lugo, this is a personal examination of one magician's life - or more specifically - his many brushes with death. The raw vulnerability in the stories is heightened by the wonder, intimacy, and sometimes danger of the classically performed parlour magic. The result is a joyful celebration of life and all of its varied deaths. The show reminds those of us on this side of the dirt that learning to find happiness, not in spite of, but because of sadness, is the most powerful magic we can create. This show contains adult language and adult content which may not be suitable for younger audiences. Viewer discretion is advised. Due to the experimental nature of the piece - this will be a Staged Reading of a work-in-progress performance. After the show please feel free to stick around to participate in a moderated feedback session with the writer/performer. (The Tank, 312 West 36th St, 1st Fl, 3pm-4pm, $10)

Join this communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to gender, art, and feminism. They will provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, reference materials, and refreshments. How can 80 billion neurons combine to produce our thoughts and feelings, from awe to amusement, or is there something more going on? That’s the hard problem. Canadian “peer reviewed rapper” Baba Brinkman takes a deep dive into the science of consciousness, the perceptions of newborn babies, and what it’s like to be an octopus tentacle on drugs in this psychedelic new production.
